APC Vs Makinde: Tensions Rise Over Osun State Local Government Elections

Osogbo, Osun State — The political climate in Osun State has intensified as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde lock horns over the recent local government elections. The APC has criticized the process, labeling it illegitimate and calling on the Federal Government to freeze allocations to Osun’s local governments, accusing Governor Ademola Adeleke of breaching legal procedures.

The APC, through its spokesperson Felix Morka, condemned Governor Adeleke’s appointment of council heads, claiming it violated a binding Court of Appeal ruling that had reinstated previously sacked local government officials until October 2025. Morka stated, “The Court of Appeal remains the ultimate authority on this matter, and any attempt to bypass its ruling undermines Nigeria’s democracy.”

Governor Adeleke, however, defended the election, stating that it followed all legal protocols. He inaugurated the newly elected local government chairmen and councillors, emphasizing that the state adhered to due process throughout the election. “The state electoral body issued a year’s notice and complied with all rules, leading to the emergence of these officials,” Adeleke asserted.

Despite the governor’s assurance, the APC criticized the election as unconstitutional, calling it a “waste of public resources” and demanding that the governor cease his “illegal push” for new local government officials. The party warned of potential unrest if the government fails to respect judicial rulings.

Governor Makinde Warns Against Escalating Tensions

Meanwhile, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde voiced his concerns during the swearing-in ceremony of the new officials, urging the APC not to destabilize Osun State. Flanked by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Makinde warned, “We don’t want the return of the wild, wild west. The APC must respect the rule of law and avoid provocative actions that could incite violence.”

Makinde called for the judiciary to resolve the dispute, discouraging the use of federal influence or self-help tactics. He stressed that peace should be prioritized over political rivalry, reminding all parties of the consequences of past political crises.

Governor Adeleke Urges New Leaders to Drive Development

Governor Adeleke, while addressing the new chairmen and councillors, emphasized their role in delivering good governance at the grassroots level. “You have a mandate to implement the PDP’s vision for community development and positive change,” he charged the new officials.

Adeleke also instructed the newly elected leaders to avoid local government secretariats still occupied by the previously sacked officials, pending a court decision on their removal. “We trust the judiciary to handle this matter lawfully and ensure the peace and order of Osun State,” he concluded.

The ongoing dispute highlights deep political divisions within the region and raises concerns about potential unrest if the crisis remains unresolved.
