Anambra Police Prevent Kidnapping, Arrest Key Suspect
In a decisive move to curb crime, the Anambra State Police Command apprehended a 32-year-old suspect, Chukwuma Obi, from Umuagu Village, Igboukwu, Aguata Local Government Area. The arrest is linked to an alleged attempt at kidnapping and extortion.
According to Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Command’s spokesperson, operatives from the Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu carried out the arrest on Tuesday. The suspect reportedly demanded ₦1.2 million in ransom, threatening to abduct the victim if the payment wasn’t made to a specified account.
Ikenga disclosed that the victim received a threatening message from someone claiming to be a member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The suspect admitted to the crime during interrogation and is cooperating with the police to identify other members of the gang involved.
This arrest follows another breakthrough last month when police nabbed a couple notorious for sending threatening messages and extorting victims under the pretense of planned kidnappings. The couple confessed to their crimes and revealed they destroyed SIM cards used in their illegal activities.
The State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to pursuing justice and preventing criminal acts. He emphasized that such proactive measures are crucial to ensuring the safety and security of Anambra residents.
