Major Breakthrough in Anambra: Suspects in Hon. Justice Azuka’s Killing Apprehended
ONITSHA – Security operatives in Anambra have successfully apprehended nine suspects allegedly responsible for the abduction and assassination of Hon. Justice Azuka, a lawmaker representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency. The tragic incident occurred on December 24, 2024, sending shockwaves across the state.
According to a security source, the arrests were made through a collaborative effort involving multiple forces, including the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Awkuzu, the newly established Agunaechemba security outfit, Udo Ga Achi, and the Special Anti-Touting Squad of Anambra State (SASA).
Who Are the Arrested Suspects?
A joint statement released by security agencies revealed the identities of some arrested suspects, including:
- Kelvin Ikechukwu Ossai (aka Ikem, 16) – Originally from Aboh, Delta State, but residing in Ogbaru, Anambra State.
- Ekene – Allegedly shot Hon. Justice Azuka twice in the leg.
- Prince (aka Tukwasi) – From Abia State.
- Uzo – From Imo State.
- Ugoo (aka Ojiekpere) – Still under investigation.
While most suspects were captured in Asaba, Delta State, two were arrested at the Bridgehead following a gun battle with security personnel.
Weapons and Evidence Recovered
Authorities recovered critical evidence, including:
- Two pump-action rifles buried inside the premises of Osa Dennis Secondary School in Asaba.
- Several stolen vehicles and cash, confirming the suspects’ involvement in multiple kidnappings across Anambra State.
Suspects’ Confessions: “It Wasn’t a Contract Killing”
During interrogation, principal suspect Kelvin Ikechukwu Ossai (Ikem) admitted that Hon. Justice Azuka was not a targeted victim. “We were already on an operation when he ran into us, so we decided to kidnap him,” he confessed.
Security reports also indicate that the gang had terrorized Anambra State for over a year, kidnapping more than 200 victims and living lavishly in Asaba using stolen funds and assets.
Security Crackdown on Fleeing Gang Members
While some suspects have been arrested, security forces are actively pursuing other gang members, including:
- Ugoo Kewe
- Nonso
- Other yet-to-be-identified accomplices
The newly formed Agunaechemba security outfit played a crucial role in dismantling this notorious gang.
Condemnations and Calls for Action
The killing of Hon. Justice Azuka has drawn widespread condemnation from civil rights organizations and public figures.
Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) Reacts
The Anambra State branch of the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) expressed deep shock over the lawmaker’s gruesome murder. In a statement, Chairman Conrade Vincent Ezekwueme described the act as barbaric and inhumane, citing religious teachings on the sanctity of human life.
Ezekwueme urged authorities to ensure justice for Azuka’s family, calling for enhanced security measures in Anambra.
Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF) Blames Governor Soludo
The Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF) criticized Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo for failing to curb insecurity. According to NUF President Augustine Chukwudumebi, criminals have besieged the state due to the government’s negligence.
Chukwudumebi warned that if security issues are not addressed, Anambra could return to the dark days of 1995–2000, when residents feared for their lives.
NUF urged Governor Soludo to:
- Establish a high-powered security committee led by retired military and law enforcement officers, all of whom must be Anambra indigenes.
- Empower local government chairmen, community leaders, and market associations to form strong vigilante groups to fight crime at the grassroots level.
