A dramatic confrontation unfolded during a Senate committee hearing on ethics, privileges, and public petitions as Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi of Ebonyi North clashed with former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili.
Tensions Rise Over Petition Against Senate President Akpabio
The session, held on Tuesday, focused on a fresh petition filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Attendees included Ezekwesili, legal representative Abiola Akiode, and petitioner Zubairu Yakubu.
Clash Erupts During Proceedings
The altercation began when Yakubu attempted to speak while committee chairman Neda Imaseun was addressing the panel. Ordered to mute his microphone, Yakubu’s interruption prompted Ezekwesili to step in. However, Nwaebonyi, present as a witness for Akpabio, intervened, triggering a fiery exchange.
- Ezekwesili reprimanded Nwaebonyi, saying, “Compose yourself and stop making noise.”
- Infuriated, Nwaebonyi retaliated, calling her a “fool” and stating, “You’re an insult to womanhood.”
- Ezekwesili fired back, labeling him a “hooligan”, which further escalated the dispute and temporarily halted the proceedings.
Adjournment Following Heated Exchange
