AFCON 2025: Morocco “Looks Scary” – Iwobi Speaks Ahead of Semifinal Showdown

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has admitted that Nigeria will face a very tough test when they meet Morocco in the semifinal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Fulham star described the Atlas Lions as a frightening side, especially after watching their dominant display against Cameroon earlier in the tournament. According to Iwobi, Morocco’s overall performance left a strong impression on him and highlighted the scale of the challenge Nigeria must overcome.

Nigeria booked their place in the semifinal after a solid 2–0 victory over Algeria, but the task ahead is significantly more demanding as they prepare to face the host nation in Rabat on Wednesday. Playing against Morocco on home soil adds extra pressure, as the North Africans have enjoyed strong support throughout the competition.

The Super Eagles are aiming to lift their first major African trophy since winning the AFCON title in 2013. On the other hand, Morocco is also desperate for continental glory, having last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1976. This shared hunger for success sets the stage for a highly competitive encounter.

Morocco boasts an impressive squad filled with top-level talent currently playing in Europe’s elite leagues. Their lineup includes Noussair Mazraoui of Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain full-back Achraf Hakimi, Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Díaz, Fenerbahçe striker Youssef En-Nesyri, and Olympiakos forward Ayoub El Kaabi. These players have been instrumental in Morocco’s strong run so far.

Speaking on Alexander Yaa Digg’s YouTube channel, Iwobi revealed that Morocco’s victory over Cameroon caught his attention even before Nigeria completed their quarterfinal fixture.

“The night before the game against Algeria, I watched Morocco beat Cameroon,” Iwobi said.
“Morocco looks good, looks scary. But we still hope to face them. We have to believe, so we can achieve. Our team is good.”

Despite acknowledging Morocco’s strength, Iwobi remains confident in Nigeria’s quality and belief. He emphasized that confidence and unity within the Super Eagles squad will be crucial if they are to overcome the hosts.

A victory for Nigeria would secure a place in a second consecutive Africa Cup of Nations final, keeping their dream of continental dominance alive and bringing them one step closer to ending their long wait for AFCON silverware.
