Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has expressed deep disappointment over the poor state of facilities at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu. During an unexpected visit to assess the university’s infrastructure, he apologized to the students for the deteriorating conditions and promised immediate intervention.
Otti announced the construction of a new 5,000-capacity hostel and a fully functional cafeteria to enhance students’ living conditions. He also directed that the use of cooking stoves, kettles, and kerosene be banned in dormitories to prevent fire hazards.
Immediate Actions and Long-Term Plans
Speaking directly to the students, the Governor acknowledged the challenges they face and assured them that improvements are on the way.
“I am happy to see you, but I am deeply concerned about the state of your facilities. These conditions are not conducive to learning, and we must take urgent action,” Otti stated.
To provide immediate relief, he instructed the university management to gradually renovate existing hostels while awaiting the completion of the new accommodation facility. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe Okudo, was also directed to set up a fully operational cafeteria for students.
Commitment to a Better Learning Environment
Governor Otti further pledged that essential utilities like electricity and potable water would be made available to ensure a conducive academic environment. He commended students for their patience and reassured them of his administration’s commitment to improving educational standards in the state.
“For those of you excelling under these difficult conditions, you deserve to be celebrated. However, we will ensure that all students have access to better facilities moving forward,” he assured.
