Abductors Of Late UNICAL Female Professor Now In Prison

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Zone 6, Calabar, Jonathan Towuru, has confirmed the detention of suspects linked to the abduction of Prof. Ekanem Ephraim, the first female professor of medicine at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

Prof. Ephraim, who was 60 years old, tragically lost her life in captivity following her kidnapping in 2023. This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer for Zone 6 Police, SP Nelson Okpabi. AIG Towuru provided this update during a courtesy visit by the Cross River State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to his office in Calabar.

Rising Cases of Kidnappings in Cross River State

In recent years, Cross River State, particularly Calabar, has witnessed a worrying increase in the kidnapping of medical professionals. Addressing this issue, AIG Towuru assured the visiting NMA delegation of intensified efforts to enhance security measures for healthcare workers.

The delegation, led by the NMA State Chairman, Dr. Ezoke Epoke, expressed concerns over the safety of medical practitioners, often targeted by kidnappers due to their perceived high income.

Police Assurances on Ongoing Investigations

AIG Towuru stated:
“Some suspects involved in the kidnapping of Prof. Ephraim are already in prison custody awaiting trial. We are intensifying efforts to uncover all details surrounding the case. I assure both the NMA and the public of improved security to support medical professionals as they continue their critical services.”

He also revealed directives to the Commissioner of Police to ensure optimal security deployment during the NMA’s forthcoming elections, pledging adequate protection for all participants.

Strengthening Collaboration Between Police and NMA

Dr. Epoke commended the AIG for reducing crime rates in the region, acknowledging recent improvements in public safety. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, describing medical practitioners as “endangered species” vulnerable to kidnappers.

To support the police, the NMA pledged ongoing mental health services at the Police Hospital in Calabar, offering free consultations every Tuesday. The association also committed to fostering stronger partnerships to ensure the safety of healthcare workers across the state.
