ABUJA – The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has asserted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is disintegrating at an alarming pace. This follows the mass defection of support groups that previously backed Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential elections to the ruling APC.
Ganduje made this statement during an official reception event on Thursday at the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja. The event witnessed the formal defection of the Coalition of Atiku Support Groups from the 19 Northern States, with representatives pledging their allegiance to APC and endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027.
Why Atiku’s Supporters Are Leaving PDP
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Hon. Abubakar Malami, the coalition’s coordinator, explained that their decision was driven by President Tinubu’s governance policies and the leadership of Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate.
“Our coalition comprises women, youths, students, traders, scholars, and farmers from different walks of life,” Malami stated.
“In 2023, we actively mobilized for Atiku Abubakar, believing he would address Nigeria’s pressing concerns, particularly insecurity and economic challenges. However, under President Tinubu, we have observed meaningful progress, including enhanced security measures and economic policies that have led to a decrease in food prices and renewed optimism for the region.”
Malami also commended the establishment of the North West Development Commission (NWDC) and the North Central Development Commission (NCDC), both of which were spearheaded by Senator Barau Jibrin to boost economic recovery in the northern region.
“One of the most impactful policies introduced is the Barau Initiative for Agricultural Revolution in the North West (BIARN), which aims to produce over 500 young farmer millionaires. If this initiative is expanded to the North East and North Central, Nigeria will achieve food security while significantly reducing youth unemployment,” Malami added.
APC Welcomes Defectors, Labels Move a ‘Game-Changer’
Welcoming the new members, Senator Barau Jibrin described their defection as a “major victory” for APC. He emphasized that the party is dedicated to transforming Nigeria and assured the defectors of full inclusion within the party’s ranks.
“This is a significant gain for our party,” Barau declared. “President Tinubu is working tirelessly to drive Nigeria towards prosperity, and we are pleased that you recognize and support his vision.”
He further reassured them, saying:
“In the APC, there is no discrimination. Whether you are a newcomer or a founding member, you will enjoy equal opportunities. Your contributions and dedication to the party’s progress are what truly matter.”
PDP’s Decline ‘Unstoppable’ – Ganduje
In his remarks, APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje reinforced that the continued defections signal the PDP’s downfall.
“Today, we officially welcome you, but after Ramadan, we will host a grand event in Abuja, where President Tinubu, the Vice President, the Senate President, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives will celebrate the final collapse of the PDP,” Ganduje announced.
He highlighted the PDP’s internal struggles, citing the party’s inability to field a governorship candidate in Anambra State as clear evidence of its weakening influence.
“The PDP is crumbling at a remarkable rate, and the APC stands as the ultimate beneficiary,” Ganduje stated. “By joining us, you are now part of a party that prioritizes progress, the rule of law, democratic principles, and peaceful governance.”
He also acknowledged Senator Barau Jibrin’s efforts in attracting new members:
“His influence extends beyond Kano; he is pulling people from all over Nigeria. He is a true leader in this political transformation.”
With these defections, APC continues to consolidate its political influence in Northern Nigeria, strategically positioning itself for a dominant performance in the 2027 general elections.
