Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has strongly denounced the explosion that affected parts of Maiduguri on Monday evening, describing the incident as a heartless and cowardly act against innocent citizens.

The governor, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for the Lesser Hajj, expressed deep grief over the attack, noting that the explosion occurred during the sacred period of Ramadan, a time when many residents are engaged in prayers and peaceful activities.

In an official statement issued through his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, the governor urged residents to stay alert and advised security agencies to intensify monitoring efforts, especially around mosques, markets, and other public gathering points.

“I am deeply saddened by the explosions that happened in parts of the city on Monday evening. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost loved ones and those who sustained injuries as a result of the blast,” Zulum stated.

He further described the attack as completely unacceptable, inhumane, and barbaric, stressing that such acts are meant to create fear among peaceful residents.

Governor Zulum explained that the renewed violence may be connected to the ongoing military offensives against insurgent groups operating in the Sambisa Forest and other suspected hideouts across the North-East region.

Despite the unfortunate incident, the governor reassured the public that the Nigerian military and other security agencies remain fully in control of the situation and are taking necessary steps to prevent further attacks.

He appealed to residents to remain calm, continue with their lawful daily activities, and cooperate with security personnel by providing useful information when necessary.

The governor also advised members of the public to immediately report any suspicious movement, strange gathering, or unusual activity within their neighborhoods to the appropriate authorities.

Zulum reaffirmed that his administration will continue to work closely with security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property throughout Borno State, adding that the government remains committed to restoring lasting peace in the region.
