Zelensky Calls for Stronger US Sanctions on Russia Amid Drone Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on the United States to intensify sanctions on Russia, following a series of overnight drone strikes that caused significant destruction across multiple locations. He emphasized that Moscow’s actions contradict any real intentions for peace.

The Ukrainian leader particularly condemned the attacks on Kryvyi Rih, his hometown, and the Sumy region, at a time when questions remain over two recently announced ceasefire agreements brokered by the United States after negotiations in Saudi Arabia.

Confusion Over Ceasefire Agreements

The United States confirmed it had secured separate agreements with both Ukraine and Russia to halt attacks over the Black Sea and on energy infrastructure. However, there is uncertainty regarding the implementation of these deals.

While Ukraine insisted the agreements were effective immediately, the Kremlin stated that the Black Sea ceasefire would only be honored if Russian banks were reconnected to the global financial system. Meanwhile, Russia claimed it had already paused energy-targeted strikes.

Though Ukrainian sources did not confirm any attacks on energy facilities, Zelensky argued that the drone strikes undermined diplomatic efforts.

“Launching such large-scale attacks after ceasefire negotiations is a clear signal to the whole world that Moscow is not going to pursue real peace,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Russia’s Drone Response and Ukrainian Casualties

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported shooting down nine Ukrainian drones, including two over the Black Sea. Moscow also accused Kyiv of attempting to target a gas storage facility in Russian-occupied Crimea and attacking energy infrastructure in Kursk and Bryansk regions.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military documented 117 drone attacks, marking a significant escalation. Local authorities in Kryvyi Rih described the assault as the most severe drone attack the city has endured since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the local military administration, reported via Telegram that the drone strikes triggered fires and structural damage, leading to at least 15 explosions in the city.

“Apparently, this is how the occupiers want peace,” Vilkul stated, condemning the ongoing aggression.

At the time of this report, Kyiv had yet to issue an official response regarding Russia’s claims.

The Path Forward: Sanctions and Military Strategy

As tensions persist, Zelensky’s push for additional US sanctions on Russia aims to deter further aggression. Global diplomatic pressure continues to mount, with calls for international intervention to address the ongoing conflict.
