Zamfara State is on edge as over 50 communities in Shinkafi Local Government Area have been deserted following threats from the notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji.
Mass Exodus Follows Turji’s Threats
The crisis was triggered by a video released by Turji, where he warned of devastating attacks on Shinkafi, Zurmi, and Isah Local Government Areas in Zamfara and Sokoto states. His demand? The release of his brother, Baka Wurgi, who is currently in military custody.
Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, a prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, disclosed in a press briefing at his Gusau residence that more than 80% of Shinkafi residents have fled to neighboring Kaura-Namoda for safety.
“Since Turji’s video surfaced, over 50 communities in Shinkafi Local Government Area have been abandoned. The threats have caused widespread panic and fear,” Dr. Shinkafi stated.
Turji’s Ultimatum and Security Concerns
In his video, released last Wednesday, Turji demanded his brother’s release by the end of the year, threatening destruction if the demand is unmet. The threats have been described as a direct insult to Nigeria’s military and security agencies.
Dr. Shinkafi called for urgent government intervention, saying, “This is a serious challenge to our national security. I urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the military to act swiftly to neutralize Turji and safeguard innocent communities.”
The Backstory: Arrest of Baka Wurgi
The current unrest stems from the December 14 arrest of Baka Wurgi, also known as Baba Na Garba, a suspected key figure in the killing of Alhaji Isah Mohammed Bawa, the Emir of Gobir in Sokoto State.
Urgent Call for Peace
This mass displacement highlights the growing insecurity in Zamfara and neighboring areas. Residents are appealing to the government for immediate action to restore peace and stability to their communities.
