Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has revealed that the state’s ongoing recruitment exercise for 771 medical professionals has attracted attention beyond Nigeria. According to the governor, applications have been submitted not only from within Abia and other states across the country but also from foreign professionals, including doctors and nurses from Zambia and South Africa.

Governor Otti emphasized that the large interest in the recruitment process underscores the state government’s commitment to revamping the healthcare sector. He noted that Abia is working tirelessly to ensure that hospitals, clinics, and healthcare centers across the state are adequately staffed with skilled medical workers who can provide quality healthcare services.

The recruitment exercise covers a wide range of healthcare roles, including:

  • Medical doctors
  • Nurses
  • Pharmacists
  • Laboratory scientists
  • Other support health workers

The governor further explained that Abia State is taking deliberate steps to make its healthcare facilities more attractive for both local and international professionals. By opening up the recruitment process, the state hopes to bridge the gap in manpower within the health sector while raising the standard of medical care available to residents.

This move is also part of the state’s broader healthcare reform strategy, which aims to strengthen public health infrastructure and ensure accessible, reliable, and affordable medical services for citizens.

With professionals from Zambia, South Africa, and other regions showing interest in serving in Abia, the government sees this as a positive sign that its reforms are gaining international recognition. It also indicates that medical practitioners outside Nigeria acknowledge the state’s renewed dedication to improving the welfare of health workers while creating an environment that supports career growth.

Governor Otti reassured residents that transparency and merit will guide the recruitment process. He maintained that only qualified candidates will be selected, regardless of their state or country of origin, ensuring that the best talent is deployed to improve healthcare delivery in Abia State.
