Narges Mohammadi Predicts Women-Led Change in Iran’s Future
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has voiced her unwavering belief that Iranian women will ultimately overthrow the Islamic republic, regardless of the government’s survival in potential military conflicts. The prominent human rights activist shared her message on International Women’s Day, reinforcing her support for gender equality in Iran.
Currently on temporary medical release from prison, the 52-year-old Mohammadi remains at risk of being re-incarcerated. Despite enduring multiple imprisonments, she has been a steadfast advocate for women’s rights and a vocal supporter of the 2022-2023 protests sparked by the tragic death of Mahsa Amini in Iranian police custody.
Women’s Movement Unstoppable Despite Crackdown
The protests, which erupted following the death of 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian Mahsa Amini, highlighted the widespread resistance against Iran’s strict dress codes and gender policies. While the government attempted to suppress the demonstrations through mass arrests and violence, the movement continues to fuel activism across the nation.
In a Persian-language video shared on her social media, Mohammadi declared, “Women have risen in such a way that the regime no longer has the power to silence them.” Notably, she appeared in the video without a headscarf, a direct defiance of Iran’s compulsory hijab laws.
Women Will Shatter the Islamic Republic’s Power
Mohammadi boldly stated that even if the Islamic republic withstands potential wars involving Israel or the United States, it will not survive the persistent resistance of Iranian women. “The glass vessel holding the life of the Islamic republic will be shattered by women,” she asserted.
She further accused the Iranian regime of enforcing “gender apartheid” since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, emphasizing the pivotal role women will play in dismantling religious authoritarianism.
Tribute to Women Sentenced to Death
Expressing solidarity with those facing severe repression, Mohammadi honored Sharifeh Mohammadi, Verisheh Moradi, and Pakhshan Azizi, three women sentenced to death for their alleged participation in anti-government activities. She condemned the verdicts as acts of retaliation against women’s defiance.
Her recent release from Evin Prison in December marked a rare moment of freedom after years of incarceration. However, her future remains uncertain as authorities continue to clamp down on dissent.
