Women Still Struggle for Respect in Nigerian Music Industry – Tems

Award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter, Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has expressed concern over the lack of respect accorded to women in the Nigerian music industry.

The Grammy-winning artist revealed that, at the start of her career, she encountered significant challenges in being taken seriously, attributing these obstacles directly to her gender.

“People don’t really respect women in the [music] industry,” Tems disclosed during a recent exclusive interview with BBC.

Tems, best known for her global hit Love Me Jeje, explained that she is determined to redefine how women perceive themselves in the music scene. According to her, this vision is being pursued through her newly launched initiative — The Leading Vibe Initiative.

She described the project as a platform designed to give women better access to opportunities, larger audiences, and a greater chance at commercial and creative success.

Speaking to aspiring female musicians, Tems offered a piece of strategic advice:

“Have a clear idea of what you want for yourself, your brand, and your boundaries. Decide what you would never do for fame and what you’re willing to do.”

Tems’ comments align with previous sentiments shared by other leading Nigerian female artists, including Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade, who have openly discussed the gender-based challenges they face in the male-dominated Nigerian music space.

Their collective voices highlight the persistent gender barriers in the industry and the urgent need for a more inclusive environment where women’s talents are recognized and respected on equal grounds.
