Wildfires Spread Near Jerusalem: Evacuations And Global Aid Response

Wildfires erupted on Wednesday around the outskirts of Jerusalem, compelling authorities to evacuate several neighborhoods and shut down a major roadway. In response, Israel has sought global support to combat the escalating inferno.

Dramatic visuals revealed flames tearing through the terrain adjacent to Route 1—the principal highway connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Alarmed residents were seen leaving their vehicles and fleeing the advancing blaze, with dense smoke engulfing the nearby hills.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Italy and Croatia are dispatching three aerial firefighting units to bolster efforts in extinguishing the fires.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that appeals have also been extended to Greece, Cyprus, and Bulgaria for additional assistance in containing the widespread blaze.

Local media sources disclosed that more than 120 fire and rescue personnel have deployed numerous ground crews, aircraft, and helicopters. The Israeli military has also contributed its search and rescue units to reinforce the firefighting operations.

Authorities stated that three communities have been evacuated so far. At least 13 individuals sustained injuries, though no fatalities were reported at the time of this update.

The wildfire coincided with Israel’s Memorial Day dedicated to fallen soldiers. As a result, numerous commemorative events marking the eve of the country’s Independence Day were cancelled, including the prominent state ceremony scheduled in Jerusalem.
