Port Harcourt – The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on various online platforms that the Port Harcourt residence of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was attacked and set on fire by hoodlums.
On Sunday night, several online sources alleged that unidentified individuals besieged and torched Wike’s residence. However, in an official statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, debunked these claims, describing them as entirely false and misleading.
Police Debunks False Reports
Superintendent Iringe-Koko clarified that the Rivers State Police Command had not recorded any such incident. She asserted that the widely circulated claims were a deliberate effort by certain individuals to incite unrest and panic within the state.
“The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a misleading and malicious report circulating on various online media platforms, falsely alleging that riots have erupted in Rivers State, leading to the burning of the residence of the former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike,” she stated.
She further assured residents that peace and security remained intact in the state, urging the public to dismiss these unfounded allegations.
Warning Against Misinformation
The police warned against the dissemination of false news, emphasizing that individuals found guilty of spreading such misinformation would face legal consequences.
“The Command categorically states that this report is entirely baseless and a deliberate attempt by mischief makers to cause panic and destabilize the peace in Rivers State. The public should disregard these claims, as normalcy prevails,” Iringe-Koko emphasized.
She urged residents to rely on credible news sources and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
