Nyesom Wike Pledges FCT Land to University of Port Harcourt, Supports N350 Million Multimedia Project

Abuja, Nigeria – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has committed to allocating land in Abuja to the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) for the establishment of its Centre for Leadership and Political Studies.

Wike made the announcement on Monday, March 17, during a meeting with UniPort’s Governing Council, led by Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Mao Ohuabunwa, a former senator. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the proposed centre will be modeled after the prestigious John F. Kennedy Leadership Center in the United States.

Wike’s Support for UniPort’s Development

Ohuabunwa appealed to Wike for support in building the leadership centre and establishing a multimedia facility at the university’s Convocation Arena as part of its 50th-anniversary celebrations. He also highlighted that the centre’s curriculum would feature “Wikematics Political Ideology.”

In response, Wike assured the delegation that he would provide land for the project while clarifying that FCT government funds would not be used. However, he personally pledged N350 million to support the multimedia facility, stating that the donation was sourced from his wife and close associates.

“Government alone cannot fund everything. Those of us who graduated from the university and have been blessed should give back,” Wike said. “I cannot take FCT money and give it to you, but I will allocate land for the centre. My wife, friends, and I will personally fund the multimedia centre.”

Wike Encourages Alumni Contributions

As an alumnus of UniPort, where he obtained his first degree in Political Science before studying Law, Wike emphasized the importance of alumni support. He urged the university’s leadership to seek contributions from other distinguished graduates, including Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo.

Earlier, Ohuabunwa praised Wike for his achievements as FCT Minister and congratulated him on his appointment.
