Rivers Political Crisis: Wike Comments on Possible Fubara Impeachment
The former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed concerns over the potential impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Wike asserted that if the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, decides to remove Fubara, it would not lead to chaos or unrest.
Wike Justifies Possible Impeachment
Addressing the media, Wike stated that there is nothing unconstitutional about an impeachment if the governor has committed offences warranting such action. He emphasized that impeachable violations, such as withholding lawmakers’ salaries for months, should not be overlooked.
“If someone commits an offence that justifies impeachment, what is wrong with it? Is impeachment a crime? It is clearly outlined in the constitution,” Wike stated.
He further dismissed speculations that Fubara’s removal would result in instability, calling such claims baseless. “People are saying that impeaching him will cause a breakdown of law and order. That’s nonsense! Nothing will happen,” he added.
Supreme Court’s Verdict on Rivers House of Assembly
Wike also took a swipe at Governor Fubara’s recent letter to the House of Assembly, arguing that it was not well-articulated. His remarks come in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling on February 28, 2025, which dismissed Fubara’s cross-appeal challenging the legitimacy of Amaewhule’s leadership of the Assembly.
In the ruling, Justice Emmanuel Akomaye ordered Speaker Amaewhule and the elected lawmakers to resume legislative functions immediately. Furthermore, the Supreme Court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other financial agencies from disbursing funds to the Rivers State Government until its House of Assembly aligns with constitutional requirements.
Additionally, the court ruled that the local government elections held in Rivers State in October 2024 were unconstitutional and therefore invalid.
