Why the Military Performs Better Under Democracy – Defence Minister Explains

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has stated that the nation’s military functions more effectively under a democratic system of government. According to him, Nigeria consistently experiences greater stability, accountability, and progress whenever democratic leadership is firmly in place.

General Musa made this assertion on Thursday during an interview on Prime Time, a current affairs programme aired on Arise Television, where he addressed critical questions surrounding governance, national security, and the role of the armed forces in a civilian-led administration.

Speaking during the interview, the retired general emphasized that the Nigerian military has remained committed to its constitutional duties by submitting itself fully to civilian authority. He described this loyalty to democratic leadership as a major strength of the armed forces and a key reason the military continues to evolve professionally.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s historical experiences, the former Chief of Defence Staff noted that Armed Forces Remembrance Day should serve as a reminder to citizens of the dangers and consequences of military takeovers. He warned that coups should never again be entertained as an option for leadership in Nigeria.

According to him, the armed forces have learned from past military interventions and now understand that democracy provides a healthier environment for military professionalism, discipline, and national unity. He stressed that countries which have reverted to military rule are facing setbacks, adding that Nigeria continues to engage such nations diplomatically to encourage a return to democratic governance.

General Musa firmly declared that coups are fundamentally wrong and should never be contemplated under any circumstance. He warned against even entertaining such thoughts, insisting that Nigeria must permanently close the chapter of military intervention in governance.

He further called on Nigerians to collectively support democratic institutions, noting that sustaining democracy requires active participation from both citizens and government stakeholders. According to him, national peace and security can only be achieved when democratic norms are protected and strengthened.

In his closing remarks, the Defence Minister urged Nigerians to work together toward maintaining peace, unity, and security across the country, reaffirming that democracy remains the best framework for national development and military effectiveness.
