A respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Jibrin Okutepa, has voiced a strong legal opinion regarding the possibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan contesting the 2027 presidential election. According to Okutepa, allowing Jonathan to contest and win the election would run contrary to the Nigerian Constitution.

Okutepa emphasized that Jonathan, who previously served as Nigeria’s president, has already completed the constitutional threshold of holding the office. He pointed out that the supreme law of the country makes clear provisions on the number of terms a person can occupy the highest political seat.

The senior lawyer further highlighted that the Nigerian Constitution restricts any individual from being sworn in as president more than twice. In Jonathan’s case, he had already completed his tenure following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before being elected in 2011, which counts as two separate terms of holding office.

Okutepa argued that any attempt to allow Jonathan to participate in the 2027 presidential race would contradict these constitutional limitations and potentially undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.

He explained that such a scenario could trigger serious legal challenges, political tension, and constitutional crises that would affect the stability of the nation. According to him, the constitution should be respected and applied equally to every citizen, regardless of status or political influence.

The Senior Advocate concluded that the rule of law must remain supreme. He maintained that Jonathan contesting again in 2027 would not only breach constitutional provisions but also weaken democratic institutions in Nigeria.

This statement has already sparked public debates among political analysts, citizens, and stakeholders who are questioning whether the former president has the constitutional right to seek re-election.
