Why Gospel Artists Are Turning to Secular Music – Ric Hassani Explains the Real Reason

Renowned Nigerian singer Ric Hassani has shed light on why several gospel artists often transition into the secular music industry, emphasizing that personal fulfilment — not financial gain — drives the switch.

In an interview with Hip TV, Hassani shared insights about the spiritual and artistic dynamics that influence this shift. Reflecting on his own journey, he noted that while he began his career singing in church, he realized that gospel ministration wasn’t his divine calling.

“Singing gospel music goes beyond just vocal performance,” Hassani explained. “You must be spiritually blessed to interpret God’s message through music. Take someone like CeCe Winans, for example — her ability to convey the Holy Spirit through song is clearly a divine gift. That’s not something everyone can replicate. Even Whitney Houston had a different kind of spiritual blessing.”

He continued by drawing a comparison: “There’s no way someone like Katy Perry could minister God’s word the same way CeCe Winans does. It’s not about talent alone — it’s about divine enablement.”

Hassani emphasized that not every artist is meant to minister within the church.

“Some of us are called to influence the world in different ways. I include Christian songs in all my albums — at least one track — because I am a committed Christian. But that’s not where my core purpose lies,” he noted. “I can’t do gospel music like Frank Edwards or Mercy Chinwo. If I venture into it fully, it may not resonate. It’s simply not my assignment.”

Speaking further, he dismissed the common notion that money is the primary motivation behind gospel artists venturing into secular music.

“Everyone likes money — even creative individuals — but true fulfilment comes from being able to create and express your ideas authentically. Think of Wizkid, Burna Boy, or Davido. These guys are already wealthy. If it was just about money, Davido wouldn’t bother making music at all. He doesn’t need the money,” Hassani said.

In conclusion, he affirmed that the satisfaction derived from creating music — from developing an idea to producing a complete song — far outweighs any monetary reward.

“That form of creative expression gives a deeper sense of purpose — something that money cannot buy.”
