The award-winning saxophonist and activist revealed his story during a recent feature on the Afropolitan Podcast, where he reflected on his childhood experiences, the heavy pressure of being compared to his father, and the struggles he endured before building his own identity in music.

The Struggles of Growing Up Under Fela’s Shadow

According to Femi Kuti, his entire childhood was marked by constant questions and pressure from people who expected him to simply become a mirror image of his father.

He explained that in school and within his community, people would often ask, “Are you not going to be like your dad? Won’t you play music like him?”

This constant comparison made Femi realize that if he wanted to pursue music, he had to carve out his own distinct path rather than live permanently in Fela’s shadow.

Finding His Own Identity in Music

Femi Kuti recalled that while staying with his mother, he eventually moved to live with Fela, which only made the pressure worse. His father often dressed him in identical outfits, making him look like a younger version of himself.

At that moment, Femi said he knew he had to make a decision:

“I just thought I should better look for myself fast, or I’m going to be a very unhappy man.”

He eventually returned to his mother and decided to create his own band.

The journey was far from easy. Femi revealed that once he launched his own band, many of Fela’s fans heavily criticized him. The media also wrote negatively about him, making it difficult to gain recognition.

He emphasized that during that time, the lack of internet and social media meant he couldn’t easily defend himself from negative press. Instead, he had to endure the criticisms and keep working to prove himself.

Despite the obstacles, Femi pushed forward and gradually established himself as one of Africa’s most respected musicians, developing his own Afrobeat style while still carrying elements of his father’s legacy.

For Femi, leaving Fela’s band was more than just about music—it was about freedom and survival. He explained that living under his father’s roof meant he couldn’t have his own life, his own children, or even his own independent path.

“Being under my father, I didn’t have any possibility of my own life, including having children. I saw my life in his life.”
