Webb Admits Error in Disallowed Fulham Goal Against Chelsea

Howard Webb, the head of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), has openly confessed that match officials made a clear mistake in disallowing Fulham’s goal against Chelsea, describing the decision as wrong rather than controversial.

During the heated London derby on Saturday, Fulham’s Josh King thought he had given his side the lead with a well-taken strike, only for the referee Rob Jones to rule it out after a lengthy VAR review. The match eventually ended in a 2-0 victory for Chelsea, leaving Fulham frustrated.

The disallowed goal came after Jones judged that Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz had committed a foul in the build-up. Muniz was ruled to have made a “careless challenge” on Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah near the halfway line before Fulham’s counter-attack led to King finding the net.

In response to the error, PGMOL quickly removed Michael Salisbury, the VAR official involved in the decision, from his scheduled duty for the highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash between Liverpool and Arsenal on Sunday. This move highlighted the seriousness of the mistake and the governing body’s effort to maintain accountability.

Speaking on Match Officials Mic’d Up, Webb admitted the call was indefensible:

“It wasn’t controversial, it was wrong. We’ve already established some core principles on how we officiate matches in the Premier League and the way VAR is applied. Unfortunately, on this occasion, those principles were not followed.”

The admission adds more fuel to the ongoing debate about VAR’s effectiveness in English football, especially with repeated errors sparking frustration among clubs and fans. With Fulham set to face Brentford in their next league fixture, attention will remain on whether match officials can improve consistency and reduce high-profile mistakes in crucial games.
