We May Resort to Self-Defense If Bandit Attacks Continue – Sokoto Residents

Residents of Kebbe Local Government Area in Sokoto State have expressed deep concern over the escalating wave of bandit attacks that have claimed several lives, left many injured, and forced others to flee their homes in search of safety. The increasing level of insecurity in these rural communities has driven people to the edge, with many now considering taking up self-defense measures to protect themselves and their families.

According to locals, the incessant attacks by armed bandits have made life unbearable in most parts of the area. They lamented that despite repeated cries for help, there has been little to no visible intervention from security agencies. The residents say they are left to face the attackers on their own, often without any form of protection or assurance from the government.

One of the residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that villages in Kebbe and its surrounding areas have become regular targets of bandits who invade at night, cart away livestock, burn houses, and kidnap people for ransom. “We can no longer sleep with our eyes closed,” he said. “Every day we live in fear of another attack. Many families have been displaced, and those who remain are living under constant tension.”

The growing frustration among locals has led to increasing discussions about forming community vigilante groups to defend themselves if government forces fail to act decisively. Residents believe that such self-help measures may be the only solution left if the security situation continues to deteriorate.

Another community leader expressed disappointment over what he described as the government’s slow response to the worsening security challenges in Sokoto. He emphasized that the people have endured too much and can no longer remain helpless while bandits continue to wreak havoc unchecked.

“We are law-abiding citizens, but when there is no protection from the government, we may have no choice but to defend ourselves,” he stated. “The people have lost loved ones, their means of livelihood, and their peace of mind. If nothing changes, the residents will be forced to take action for their survival.”

Banditry has become one of the major security threats in Northern Nigeria, with states like Zamfara, Katsina, Niger, and Sokoto experiencing frequent attacks. Analysts have continued to call on the federal and state governments to adopt a more proactive approach to tackling the menace through improved intelligence gathering, deployment of advanced technology, and community policing strategies.

Security experts also warn that the growing inclination toward self-defense could lead to more violence if not properly managed. They urged the authorities to step up their presence in the affected areas and ensure that residents are protected from further harm.

The Sokoto State Government has yet to issue a formal statement addressing the latest wave of attacks in Kebbe Local Government, but sources suggest that measures are being discussed to strengthen local security operations and improve collaboration with neighboring states.
