Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has strongly criticized Steve Witkoff, an envoy of former U.S. President Donald Trump, for endorsing Russia’s referendums in four occupied Ukrainian regions. Witkoff claimed that the referendums proved that a majority of the local population preferred Russian governance.
Zelenskyy condemned these remarks, stating that they align closely with Kremlin propaganda. He expressed hope that, over time, U.S. officials would recognize Russia’s lack of sincerity in its diplomatic engagements.
Black Sea Ceasefire Talks & Russia’s Stance
Amid ongoing conflicts, the United States announced on Tuesday that both Russia and Ukraine have agreed to cease hostilities in the Black Sea following negotiations in Saudi Arabia. However, Russia has set conditions, insisting that a maritime truce would only be possible if Western sanctions on its agricultural exports were lifted.
Russia has also signaled reluctance to withdraw from the Ukrainian territories under its control, including regions like Kursk.
Trump’s Position on the Ukraine War
Former President Donald Trump, who previously vowed to end the war within 100 days if re-elected, has since been working on diplomatic strategies to fulfill this promise. His administration is reportedly reviewing Russia’s demands for the Black Sea ceasefire agreement before making further commitments.
