The US State Department expressed its support on Sunday for extending the one-day Easter ceasefire, initially declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin, beyond Sunday, despite the Kremlin’s earlier statement that no order had been given for an extension. Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of violating the temporary ceasefire.
Putin announced the brief ceasefire in Ukraine, effective until midnight Moscow time (2100 GMT) on Sunday, coinciding with Easter celebrations.
“We have noted President Putin’s temporary ceasefire announcement due to Easter. We remain fully committed to achieving a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire. As we evaluate the sincerity of this move, we would welcome the possibility of it being extended beyond Sunday,” stated a spokesperson from the US State Department.
Former President Donald Trump has frequently warned about the escalating risks of the ongoing war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago. Trump has repeatedly emphasized his desire to end the conflict.
However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned on Friday that Washington would abandon efforts to facilitate a peace agreement unless there is significant progress in the near future.
Following a memorandum of understanding between the US and Ukraine on Thursday, Trump announced he expects to sign a minerals agreement with Kyiv within a week.
