US Expands Egg Imports from Korea and Turkey to Address Price Surge

In response to soaring egg prices caused by widespread avian flu outbreaks, the United States has begun importing eggs from Turkey and South Korea. Brooke Rollins, Agriculture Secretary to President Donald Trump, confirmed on Friday that these imports aim to stabilize the domestic supply and curb price inflation.

US Imports Millions of Eggs to Counter Supply Shortages

Rollins revealed that discussions are ongoing with additional countries to temporarily supplement the US egg supply. “We are securing hundreds of millions of eggs for the short term,” she stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Egg Prices Surge Amid Bird Flu Crisis

The recent avian flu outbreaks have led to the culling of over 30 million birds across the United States, significantly disrupting the egg supply chain. The resulting shortage has caused egg prices to spike, making them a central issue in last year’s presidential election. During his campaign, Trump criticized the rising cost of essential goods under the previous administration, leveraging public frustration.

After resuming office in January, Trump assigned Rollins the task of increasing egg supply and reducing prices. Since then, various international producers, including those in Poland and Lithuania, have reported inquiries from US officials seeking fresh egg imports.

Global Egg Supply Adjustments and Future Outlook

Katarzyna Gawronska, Director of Poland’s National Chamber of Poultry and Feed Producers, noted that egg shortages are affecting multiple nations. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that wholesale egg prices have dropped nearly 50% since late February, suggesting a potential decrease in consumer costs soon. “The downward trend underscores the effectiveness of USDA’s approach,” the agency stated.

Rollins assured reporters that these egg imports will cease once US poultry farms can restore adequate supply levels.
