A Nigerian investor based in the United States, Mrs. Onyinye Urum Ukaegbu Ibe, has filed a petition with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, requesting urgent intervention over threats to set ablaze her multi-million naira piggery and cassava farm located in Abiriba, Abia State.
Investor Appeals for Security After Alleged Threats
Mrs. Ukaegbu Ibe, an indigene of Abiriba who is married in Imo State, detailed in a legal petition through her attorney, Obasi Awa, that the threats emerged after the unfortunate death of one of her farm employees. The incident led to unfounded allegations that the deceased was murdered by his coworkers, an accusation she firmly refutes.
Security Reinforcement Urged to Prevent Arson
Describing the allegations as a baseless attempt to sabotage her investment, the investor has called for a thorough police investigation to determine the actual cause of the worker’s death. She also requested heightened security to prevent the destruction of her farm by potential arsonists.
The petition states:
“We have been engaged by DO GOOD PIGGERY FARMS, ABIRIBA, and it is our directive that on February 24, 2025, a farm worker, Joseph Urum, fell ill while at work. His coworkers took him to the hospital, where he underwent surgery but sadly did not survive.”
Following Joseph’s passing, his family lodged a complaint at the Abiriba Police Division, claiming he was murdered by fellow workers. Several individuals, including Oko Ukaegbu, Pastor Ejemole Ukaegbu, Maduka, and Bassey, were subsequently arrested, with investigations ongoing.
The petition further emphasizes the need for police intervention:
“The Abiriba community is threatening to destroy lives and properties on our client’s farm. Given the intensity of the mob threats, the local police are unable to contain the situation, necessitating additional security reinforcements.”
Investor Denies Organ Harvesting Allegations
Speaking via phone from the United States, Mrs. Ukaegbu Ibe expressed deep concern over the situation. She explained that she established the farm to support local workers and empower the community through employment opportunities.
She also addressed disturbing allegations circulating on the Abiriba community platform, accusing her of attempting to harvest the deceased worker’s kidney for her son. She dismissed these claims as unfounded, emphasizing that both she and her son reside in the U.S. and had no involvement in such acts.
To ascertain the true cause of Joseph’s death, she has called for an autopsy.
Traditional Ruler Confirms Incident, Police Investigate
The paramount ruler of Abiriba’s ancient kingdom, HRM Eze Kalu Kalu Ogbu (Enachoken Abiriba), confirmed the case, adding that the police have taken charge of the investigation.
The monarch stated:
“After discussions with both parties and traditional rulers, we found inconsistencies in the narratives presented. Given the severity of the allegations, we referred the case to law enforcement authorities.”
He further revealed that measures had been implemented to safeguard the farm from mob attacks:
“Some individuals threatened to set the farm ablaze based on misinformation. However, we intervened to prevent any unlawful destruction, allowing minimal activities to continue while police investigations proceed.”
Police Yet to Respond
Efforts to obtain an official response from the Abia State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Moureen Chilaka, did not answer calls or respond to messages at the time of this report.
