The brutal killing of 16 individuals in Uromi, Edo State, has sparked outrage and sorrow throughout Northern Nigeria, leaving communities in mourning and demanding justice. This horrific event, which involved the lynching and burning of hunters by a mob, has drawn widespread condemnation.

Survivors report that the men were traveling through Uromi when they were apprehended and found with firearms. These weapons were later confirmed to be lawful hunting rifles. Despite their pleas for mercy and attempts to explain their situation, they were accused of criminal activity, resulting in them being beaten and burned alive by the mob.
Calls for Accountability Amid Growing Fear of Reprisal
In the wake of the killings, members of the hunters’ community have warned of potential reprisals if the government fails to act swiftly. Tensions are rising, and the demand for justice is intensifying, with many calling for the immediate prosecution of the perpetrators.
Retired JTF Commander: The Attack Could Have Been Prevented
Reacting to the tragedy, Dr. Isma’il Tanko Birnin Kudu, a retired Joint Task Force (JTF) commander from Kano, condemned the killings as a “heinous and cowardly act” against innocent travelers. While he acknowledged the quick response of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, including relieving the local vigilante leader of his duties, he emphasized that these actions must be followed by substantial justice to prevent further unrest.
The Need for Public Prosecution and Justice
Dr. Tanko emphasized the importance of a transparent and public trial for those responsible for the mob killings. He stated that only through the public prosecution of the offenders can the thirst for revenge be curbed. “Justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done,” he remarked, stressing the need for swift and decisive action.
Compensation for the Victims’ Families: A Call for Justice
Tanko also urged the government to compensate the families of the deceased, providing both financial support and closure for the tragic loss. “These families deserve justice and support in this time of grief,” he added.
Apology to the Hunters Association of Nigeria
Dr. Tanko further called for a public apology from the Edo State government to both the families of the victims and the Hunters Association of Nigeria. He highlighted that the association, a respected security group, must be recognized and respected by local authorities.
Training Vigilante Groups: A Key to Community Security
Dr. Tanko stressed the need for professional training of vigilante groups, urging the government to appoint retired military or paramilitary personnel to oversee their training. “Security cannot be entrusted to individuals without proper training,” he warned. “It requires structure, experience, and an understanding of civil conduct.”
Hunters Association Issues a Stern Warning
The Toronke Hunters Association in Birnin Kudu, Kano State, led by Alhaji Musa Dogo, expressed their anger over the killings and issued a stern warning. Dogo vowed that the association would not remain silent if justice was not served. “This is not a threat; it is a promise,” he asserted.
As investigations continue, there is a growing demand across the country for reconciliation, accountability, and justice. Community leaders and security experts are urging the government to act swiftly to prevent further escalation of the situation.
