Fresh Air Raid Alarms In Ukraine After Russia’s Brief Easter Ceasefire Ends

Just hours after Russia’s one-day Easter ceasefire expired, Ukraine was once again under heavy air raid alerts. The Ukrainian air force issued warnings across Kyiv and much of the eastern region, as explosions were heard in the southern port city of Mykolaiv early Monday morning.

According to Reuters, the short-lived truce initiated by President Vladimir Putin on Saturday ended at midnight Moscow time, and there has been no extension. Despite the temporary halt, both Ukraine and Russia accused each other of violating the agreement. Ukraine documented nearly 3,000 breaches during the ceasefire window, particularly along the Pokrovsk front line.

While Ukraine expressed readiness to uphold a 30-day pause in combat, President Zelenskyy stressed multiple times that a prolonged truce would aid peace efforts. However, the Kremlin did not issue any further directives to extend the ceasefire. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, as cited by Russia’s TASS News Agency, confirmed there were no additional commands from Moscow.

In the early hours of Monday, the Ukrainian air force reported that air raid alerts began shortly after midnight in the east and steadily expanded toward central regions. By 4:41 a.m. local time, Kyiv’s military command urged civilians to head to the nearest shelters and stay protected until the danger subsided.

Mykolaiv’s Mayor, Oleksandr Senkevich, confirmed via Telegram that explosions had occurred in the city but did not clarify whether they resulted from active air defense or a direct strike.

Meanwhile, across the border, Russia’s Voronezh region also experienced air raid sirens overnight. Russian officials reported 444 attacks from Ukrainian forces and over 900 drone incidents, causing multiple civilian casualties.

Zelenskyy’s administration highlighted that despite a calm Sunday, the truce was largely symbolic, given the high number of recorded Russian violations.
