Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has openly criticized both himself and his teammates following their disappointing UEFA Champions League defeat to Benfica on Wednesday night.
Real Madrid were beaten 4–2 at home by Benfica, despite Mbappé scoring twice in the match. His two goals, however, were not enough to prevent defeat as the Portuguese club capitalized on Madrid’s defensive and tactical lapses throughout the game.
Reflecting on the result, Mbappé did not shy away from responsibility, stressing that the outcome was deserved based on how the team played.
“We deserved to lose. It was not a good performance. We are too inconsistent,” Mbappé said after the match, as quoted by respected football journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The forward went further to emphasize that inconsistency is a major issue that must be addressed immediately if Real Madrid are to succeed at the elite level.
“We can’t keep being this inconsistent. We can’t keep doing this day on, day off thing, it’s not what champions do.”
Attention will now turn to domestic action, where Mbappé will be hoping to inspire a positive response when Real Madrid face Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga this weekend, as the club looks to regain momentum after the European setback.
