UEFA Champions League action has once again been overshadowed by controversy, as Benfica manager Jose Mourinho delivered a firm message to Gianluca Prestianni regarding the alleged racism incident involving Vinicius Jr..
The Benfica coach made it clear that Prestianni’s future at the club would be in serious jeopardy if he is found guilty of racially abusing the Real Madrid winger. Mourinho stressed that both he and the club uphold strict principles, and any violation of those standards would have severe consequences.
The controversy began during the first leg of the Champions League knockout clash between Benfica and Real Madrid in Lisbon on February 17. Vinicius alleged that Prestianni directed racist remarks toward him during the heated encounter.
Prestianni, 20, has categorically rejected the claims. Despite his denial, UEFA imposed a suspension that ruled him out of the return leg in Spain while investigations continue.
European football’s governing body is still reviewing the matter to determine whether disciplinary action beyond the initial ban is necessary.
Mourinho also faced backlash after suggesting that Vinicius’ goal celebration may have provoked sections of the crowd. However, the experienced tactician clarified his stance on Sunday, emphasizing zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior within his squad.
“If my player fails to respect these principles — which are mine and Benfica’s — then that player’s career under a coach named Jose Mourinho and at a club called Benfica will be finished,” Mourinho stated firmly.
The incident adds another chapter to the broader issue of racism in football, a problem that governing bodies, clubs, and players continue to confront across Europe’s elite competitions.
