UCL: Jamie Carragher Highlights Why Arsenal Struggle Compared to Chelsea and Liverpool in Player Sales

Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has openly criticized Arsenal’s transfer window strategy, pointing out that the North London club performs poorly when it comes to selling players compared to rivals like Chelsea and Liverpool.

Carragher made this observation following Arsenal’s recent 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the UEFA Champions League, where Mikel Arteta’s side showcased their new signings.

During the just-concluded summer transfer window, Arsenal invested over £250 million in major signings including Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, and Eberechi Eze. These reinforcements highlight the club’s ambition to compete at the highest level both in the Premier League and Europe.

However, when it comes to generating revenue through player sales, Carragher believes Arsenal fall short. Despite several departures, the Gunners raised less than £20 million, a figure significantly lower than what top rivals manage during similar windows.

Key players such as Jorginho and Thomas Partey departed on free transfers at the end of their contracts, while others like Reiss Nelson, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Fabio Vieira were sent out on loan, which limited the financial return for the club.

Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher drew comparisons between Arsenal and Europe’s elite clubs:

“When you look at Arsenal’s team and squad, it is what you expect to see at Real Madrid or PSG. Arsenal have to be very close this season when it comes to winning major trophies like the Premier League or the Champions League.”

He further explained that while Liverpool also spent heavily in the transfer market, they balanced their spending with smart sales—a strategy Arsenal has failed to implement.

“In terms of Mikel Arteta, you’ve got to look at the spending. Liverpool have definitely spent a lot this summer, no doubt. But the key difference is that Liverpool and Chelsea know how to sell. They generate huge amounts of money from player sales, which allows them to reinvest massively. Arsenal don’t, and that’s a weakness.”

This criticism shines a spotlight on Arsenal’s transfer business model, which, despite big investments, leaves them financially less efficient compared to their closest rivals.
