UCL: Enzo Maresca Explains Why Chelsea Lost 3-1 to Bayern Munich

Chelsea head coach, Enzo Maresca, admitted that the early setback against Bayern Munich shifted the momentum of their Champions League opener, resulting in a 3-1 defeat.

The Blues started their European campaign on Wednesday night but were quickly put on the back foot after an own goal from Trevor Chalobah gifted Bayern the lead. Moments later, Harry Kane doubled the Bundesliga champions’ advantage from the penalty spot after Moises Caicedo was judged to have committed a foul.

Chelsea briefly found hope when Cole Palmer reduced the deficit with a fine strike, but Kane struck again later, sealing victory for the German giants.

Speaking after the game in an interview with TNT Sports, Maresca reflected on the match, noting both positives and lessons to be learned:

“Overall, our performance was quite good. We had a strong opening 20 minutes and created a few clear chances. However, conceding the first goal — which was avoidable — completely shifted the game.”

Maresca emphasized that Chelsea still managed to stay competitive despite setbacks:

“We scored to get back into the match, but the referee’s call not to send off Jonathan Tah was a decisive moment. It looked more like a red card than a yellow. Even so, we began the second half positively and created opportunities.”

However, once Bayern grabbed their third goal, Maresca admitted that the contest effectively slipped away:

“The third goal really killed the match. With the penalty, the controversial decision, and the own goal, it became a difficult night. Still, we stayed in the game until the very end.”

The Chelsea boss concluded by stressing the need for consistency at the highest level of European competition:

“We must learn from this. Games like this demand 95 minutes of full concentration, not just good spells. At times, we were not sharp enough. Despite the result, the performance had positives. Now, it’s about recovery because another tough fixture is coming in two games’ time.”
