The United States has deported 131 migrants from Central Asia, including nationals from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan, as part of an ongoing immigration enforcement initiative under the Trump administration. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that the deportations occurred on Wednesday, facilitated through coordinated efforts with the respective governments of these countries.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized the importance of international collaboration in addressing immigration challenges, stating, “We look forward to continuing to work together with Uzbekistan on efforts to enhance our mutual security and uphold the rule of law.”
This development aligns with President Donald Trump’s broader immigration policy, which has seen a significant increase in deportations. In the fiscal year 2024, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported deporting 572 Uzbek nationals, a 6.5-fold increase compared to the previous year.
The administration’s approach has also included establishing agreements with third countries to accept deported migrants. For instance, Panama has begun receiving deportees from various nations, including Uzbekistan, under new diplomatic arrangements.
However, these measures have drawn criticism from human rights advocates and legal experts, who argue that the rapid deportations may compromise due process and lead to family separations. Concerns have been raised about cases where individuals were deported without adequate legal proceedings, potentially violating international human rights standards.
The U.S. Embassy in Tashkent has issued warnings to Uzbek citizens about the dangers of illegal migration and the risks associated with relying on human smugglers. They urge individuals to pursue legal avenues for migration to ensure safety and compliance with international laws.
