Nigerians Arrested in KZN for Drug Possession and Cash Seizure

Two Nigerian nationals, Chima Ihekwoaba (44) and Uchechukwu Mbaogu (26), have been arrested in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) for allegedly dealing in drugs. The arrest was carried out in Port Shepstone by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, in collaboration with several law enforcement units, including Counter Narcotics, Crime Intelligence, Port Shepstone K9, Tactical Response Team, and Scottburgh Visible Policing.

Details of the Arrest

The Hawks initiated an operation after receiving intelligence about a group involved in drug dealings near Park Rynie, close to Scottburgh. Following extensive undercover operations, the suspects were profiled and tracked.

On Thursday, a takedown operation led to the arrest of both men. Authorities seized various drugs, including rock cocaine, CAT, and crystal meth, valued at approximately R8,700 on the streets. In addition, R38,450 in cash, suspected to be the proceeds of drug transactions, was confiscated.

Asset Forfeiture Process Initiated

The confiscated cash has been handed over to the Asset Forfeiture Investigation Unit for further examination and processing.

The suspects appeared before the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where they were remanded in custody. Their case has been postponed to December 30, 2024, for further legal proceedings.

Related Incident in Free State

In a similar case, a 41-year-old police sergeant from the Anti-Gang Unit and his 32-year-old female accomplice were summoned to appear before the Hennenman Magistrates Court for drug possession.

The suspects were arrested in Welkom by the Serious Organized Crime Investigation detectives on Thursday, December 19, 2024. Their earlier arrest on May 11, 2023, revealed 14 mandrax tablets during a search at the sergeant’s residence in Hennenman. Both suspects were released at the time pending a forensic report.

They are now scheduled to appear in court on January 15, 2025.
