United States President Donald Trump has cautioned Republican lawmakers that failure to secure victory in the 2026 midterm elections could expose his administration to renewed impeachment efforts by Democrats.

Speaking during a closed-door Republican retreat in Washington, Trump stressed that holding congressional power is crucial for the survival of his presidency. According to reports by ABC News, the president told party members that losing the midterms would give political opponents an opening to pursue impeachment proceedings.

He warned that Democratic control of Congress would not only halt his legislative plans but also trigger investigations aimed at weakening his administration. Trump emphasized that unity within the Republican Party is essential, particularly as the party currently holds only a narrow majority in the US House of Representatives.

Addressing internal divisions, the president urged lawmakers to put disagreements aside and focus on promoting core Republican positions. He highlighted policies related to gender issues, healthcare reform, and election integrity as key talking points for voters, especially Americans struggling with rising living costs.

Trump acknowledged the long-standing political trend where the ruling party often loses ground during midterm elections. Expressing frustration, he questioned why public sentiment frequently shifts against sitting presidents despite electoral victories just two years earlier.

While inflation was mentioned briefly, Trump placed responsibility on previous Democratic leadership, stating that current economic challenges were inherited. He encouraged Republicans to campaign on positive market performance, pointing to gains in the US stock market as evidence of progress under his leadership.

The president also minimized the significance of the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, an event carried out by his supporters. His remarks coincided with Democrats marking the fifth anniversary of the attack, during which they accused Republicans of attempting to rewrite or downplay historical facts.

The retreat took place at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Trump delivered a largely unscripted address lasting over an hour, during which he repeated several disputed assertions, including claims that Washington had experienced months without any homicide cases.

Confident about the future, Trump predicted that Republicans would secure what he described as an “epic” victory in the 2026 midterms. At the same time, he criticized members of his party whom he believes are unwilling to fully align with his agenda.

Looking ahead to November 2026, all seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate will be up for election. Historically, no sitting US president has managed to avoid losing House seats during midterms since George W. Bush achieved the feat in 2006.

Trump further encouraged Republicans to challenge Democratic narratives on healthcare, particularly regarding proposals to extend subsidies tied to the Affordable Care Act. He urged lawmakers to take ownership of healthcare policy and develop clear, unified strategies.

He also advised conservative legislators to remain flexible on sensitive issues such as the Hyde Amendment, which limits federal funding for abortion services, suggesting that adaptability could strengthen the party’s electoral appeal.

Reflecting on his political history, Trump reminded lawmakers that he faced impeachment twice during his first term, though both attempts ended in acquittal by the Senate. He dismissed those proceedings as baseless and criticized current efforts by some House Democrats who have introduced new articles of impeachment during his second term—claims that the White House continues to deny.

With Republicans holding only a slim advantage in the House, Trump noted that the limited margin restricts the authority of Speaker Mike Johnson. He remarked that leadership becomes significantly more difficult when the majority is razor-thin, reinforcing his call for unity ahead of the next major electoral test.
