In a recent statement on Truth Social, former U.S. President Donald Trump shared optimism that Russia and Ukraine could finalize a peace agreement within the week. The development, if achieved, could not only halt a war that has persisted for over three years but also pave the way for renewed trade relations between the two Eastern European nations and the United States.
Trump emphasized the potential for economic collaboration, stating, “Once a deal is made, both sides will begin significant business operations with the United States, which is currently thriving economically.” He reiterated one of his core beliefs, quoting, “The golden rule of negotiating and success: he who has the gold makes the rules.”
He further added a philosophical note on global responsibility: “The world will not be destroyed by those who commit evil, but by those who watch and do nothing.”
Failed Mineral Deal Attempt in Washington
Last month, Trump attempted to broker a strategic mineral partnership with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington, but the negotiation did not yield results. According to reports, tensions flared during the meeting, causing the discussions to collapse.
Despite the breakdown of talks, a ray of hope appeared when Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a willingness to initiate an “Easter truce” by halting all military operations in Ukraine temporarily.

According to Volodymyr Landa, a senior economist at the Centre for Economic Strategy in Kyiv, the proposed U.S.-Ukraine mineral deal has undergone “multiple iterations,” highlighting the complexity behind the scenes. In a quote featured in The Guardian, he said, “It’s hard to say what’s inside.”
Toward a Peaceful Resolution
With over three years of warfare leading to thousands of casualties on both sides, international leaders, including Trump and several European powers, remain focused on facilitating a peaceful resolution.
Zelenskyy continues to seek stronger ties with U.S. leadership to rebuild Ukraine’s economy and diplomatic strength. His administration remains hopeful that U.S. engagement, either under Trump or future American leadership, will lead to meaningful progress.
