Minna, Nigeria – A devastating explosion rocked Sabon Pegi village in the Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State on Sunday, claiming the lives of 25 individuals and leaving several others injured. This tragedy follows just days after a fuel tanker explosion along the Dikko-Maje-Minna road.

The blast occurred at a mining site, with reports indicating that improper storage of explosive devices used for mining activities may have triggered the disaster. Rescue efforts are ongoing as locals search for missing persons, including women and children, believed to be buried under the rubble.

Casualties and Damages

In addition to the fatalities, several people sustained severe injuries and have been rushed to hospitals in New Bussa for treatment. Numerous homes and shops in the village were reduced to debris, leaving residents devastated and homeless.

Ahmed, a local resident, described the situation:

“The explosion happened early in the morning just as miners were starting work. Villagers are terrified to approach the site, fearing more explosives could detonate.”

The explosion’s impact extended to 12 residential houses, with military personnel cordoning off the area for safety.

Possible Cause of the Explosion

According to local sources, the explosion may have been caused by dynamites improperly stored in a residential house. A man identified as Yushau, who reportedly kept the explosives in his uncle’s home while using the location as a shop, is currently at large.

Superintendent of Police Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the cause:

“Dynamites stored in a densely populated area detonated, resulting in the tragic deaths and injuries. Efforts are underway to track down the suspect, Yushau.”

Authorities, including the Niger State Commissioner of Police, CP Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman, have launched a full investigation into the incident.

Community on Edge

Residents of Sabon Pegi remain fearful of further explosions, particularly since terrorist activities have been previously reported in the area. The use of explosive devices for mining, combined with unsafe handling, raises concerns about safety regulations in the region.

The tragedy has sparked calls for stricter controls over the storage and handling of explosives to prevent future disasters.

Key Takeaways

  • Death toll: 25 confirmed dead, with others injured and missing.
  • Injuries: Victims receiving medical care at General Hospital Kainji in New Bussa.
  • Damage: Explosion destroyed several homes and businesses.
