In a heartbreaking turn of events, a final-year Computer Science student of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, identified as Prince, was tragically shot dead by gunmen early Wednesday morning in the Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.

The incident occurred at Prince’s residence on Abuja Street, within the Ikot Osurua community. According to reports, he was fatally attacked in the presence of his girlfriend. Prince, who had been eagerly awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Sources within the polytechnic community revealed that the gunmen invaded the compound at around 1 a.m., heading straight to Prince’s room. The victim’s girlfriend, witnessing the attack, raised an alarm that alerted nearby residents.

Despite efforts to save him, Prince was rushed to the hospital but was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.

A local resident who saw Prince just hours before the incident described him as a familiar and beloved figure in the community. He was also an active member of his church’s choral group, further endearing him to many.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the polytechnic and surrounding community, with friends, neighbors, and colleagues mourning the untimely loss of a young man with a promising future.

Police Investigation Underway

The Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the tragic event, attributing it to a robbery and cult-related operation. “Preliminary information suggests the attackers were involved in a robbery and cult-related activities in the area. The student was unfortunately caught in the crossfire,” he stated.

Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

The tragic murder has reignited calls for improved security measures in the Ikot Ekpene area. Community members are urging authorities to prioritize safety and implement strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
