A heartbreaking road traffic incident on the Ikorodu-Sagamu expressway in Ogun State has claimed the lives of 18 individuals, including an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), according to a detailed statement from the Ogun Sector Command.
The fatal multiple-vehicle accident, which occurred around 4:00 PM on Saturday, April 5th, involved five vehicles and two motorcycles, highlighting the recurring danger of reckless driving and mechanical failure on Nigerian roads.

According to a press release by FRSC spokesperson Florence Okpe, the rescue operation was tragically interrupted when another vehicle lost control due to brake failure and rammed into the responders. This incident resulted in the death of an FRSC officer from the Mosimi Unit Command who was on-site assisting victims of the initial crash.
“The rescue team was actively responding when another vehicle, unable to brake, collided into them, killing one of our officers,” said Florence Okpe.

- Total people involved: 22
- Injured: 4 (including men, women, and one child)
- Dead: 18, including the FRSC personnel
The injured individuals were rushed to Dasochris Hospital in Gbaga, while the deceased were deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue.
⚠️ Sector Commander Urges Caution
Reacting to the incident, Sector Commander Fasakin Akinwumi expressed deep sorrow and urged road users to obey traffic signs, maintain recommended speed limits, and ensure routine vehicle maintenance to avoid brake failure or other technical issues.
This tragic event comes just hours after another fatal accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where seven people died following a crash involving a gas tanker, a yellow commercial bus, and another truck. Excessive speed and loss of control were cited as the main causes in both incidents.
