A devastating explosion in Omoku, the headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
Environmental advocate and Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, Fyneface Dumnamene, confirmed the tragic event in an official statement. Reports indicate that the explosion erupted within a room in a residential compound, suspected to be a storage site for illegally refined petroleum products.
Dumnamene detailed that the occupants of the affected building were involved in purchasing adulterated kerosene and other petroleum derivatives, stockpiling them for resale to unsuspecting members of the community.
The statement noted, “The tragic fire incident occurred around 11:00 am on Saturday, claiming the lives of five individuals, including four women and one man, all of whom were burned beyond recognition.”
Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, corroborated the incident and further clarified the circumstances leading to the explosion. She explained that a resident had been using a cooking stove to prepare noodles inside the premises, which sparked the fire and caused the devastating blast.
This recent disaster follows two earlier explosions in March within Rivers State. The first occurred at the Trans-Niger Pipeline in Bodo, located in Gokana Local Government Area, while the second explosion struck a pipeline manifold in Omwawriwa Community, also in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.
In response to the escalating safety concerns, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025. He also suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the interim administrator of the state.
The repeated incidents highlight the growing risks associated with the illegal refining and unsafe storage of petroleum products in residential areas, calling for urgent interventions by security agencies and environmental groups.
