A heartbreaking maritime incident occurred off the coast of California, where at least three individuals have lost their lives, and nine others remain unaccounted for following the capsizing of a small vessel.
According to a spokesperson from the United States Coast Guard, the vessel, which was carrying a total of 16 passengers, encountered distress near Del Mar, a coastal community located north of San Diego, at approximately 6:30 am local time (1330 GMT).
“Search operations are currently underway for the nine missing persons off the coast of Del Mar, California,” the Coast Guard announced.
“Efforts commenced following a report regarding a capsized vessel,” the agency added in an official statement.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the Coast Guard spokesperson revealed that the overturned boat was a “panga-style vessel”, a type of narrow, open fishing boat known for its high bow and skiff-like design, commonly used in coastal waters.
As of the time this report was published, authorities had yet to release specific details about the origin of the vessel or the identities and nationalities of those on board.
