Thousands had gathered before dawn at an event organized by a local radio station in collaboration with a charity led by Queen Naomi Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, a prominent traditional monarch.
The organizers announced plans to distribute food parcels to the first 5,000 attendees, drawing families from surrounding areas who traveled over 90 minutes to secure their place. Unfortunately, the event turned tragic as the overwhelming crowd surged, leading to the deadly stampede.

President Bola Tinubu expressed condolences to the victims’ families and acknowledged the pain of losing loved ones during what should be a season of joy and celebration. He attributed the tragedies partly to “operational lapses” by the charitable organizations involved, calling for stricter measures to prevent future incidents.
