In an emotional statement, Hollywood icon Tom Cruise has honored his late friend and co-star Val Kilmer, following the actor’s death at 65. The two shared the screen in the 1986 classic Top Gun and reunited for the highly anticipated Top Gun: Maverick in 2022.
Cruise, who portrayed Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, and Kilmer, who played Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, became iconic duos in the world of film. Their bond transcended the screen, and Cruise’s heartfelt words at CinemaCon 2025 highlighted their lasting friendship.
Speaking at the event held at the Colosseum in Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Cruise said, “I’d like to take a moment to honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer. I can’t express enough how much I admire his talent and the impact he had on our industry. It was a privilege to work with him in Top Gun, and again in Top Gun: Maverick. His return to the franchise meant so much to all of us.”
Reflecting on Kilmer’s legacy, Cruise added, “Val loved movies and gave so much to this industry. He was an incredible talent, and we are all better for having known him. I hope we can all take a moment to reflect on the many wonderful memories we shared with him.”
Cruise concluded by sending his best wishes for Kilmer’s next journey, saying, “I wish you well on your next journey, my friend.”
