Tinubu’s Visit to Saint Lucia: Diplomatic Mission, Not Leisure — Presidency Explains

The Nigerian Presidency has firmly addressed recent claims, clarifying that President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Saint Lucia is intended for diplomatic and strategic engagements rather than for vacation.

President Tinubu arrived early Sunday at Vieux Fort in Saint Lucia, which led to widespread speculation suggesting he was in the Caribbean country for personal leisure or vacation purposes.

However, in a statement on Sunday, Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesperson, dismissed such suggestions. He described the reports as misguided, misinformed, and motivated by mischief.

Onanuga explained that, from Saint Lucia’s own perspective, the Nigerian president’s visit holds significant diplomatic and cultural weight. The Saint Lucian government, he noted, views this engagement as an opportunity to renew deep ancestral ties, establishing a new path for expanded diplomatic, cultural, and economic collaborations between both countries.

He highlighted that Saint Lucia, like many Caribbean nations, has a considerable population of African heritage. During the mid-1800s, immigrants from what is now modern-day Nigeria made their way to Saint Lucia, sharing rich cultural and religious traditions that have been preserved and cherished by the Saint Lucian people up to today.

According to the presidential aide, the people of Saint Lucia are enthusiastic about President Tinubu’s visit and are eager to strengthen their long-standing ancestral connections with African nations, particularly Nigeria.

He further stressed that given the current global uncertainties, it is increasingly important for Africa and the Caribbean to build stronger cooperative ties.

Tinubu’s diplomatic outreach, Onanuga explained, is consistent with Nigeria’s “Four D’s” foreign policy framework, which includes Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography. This mission also reinforces the African Union’s Sixth Region initiative, which recognizes the African diaspora as an essential partner in development and transformation.

Additionally, Nigeria continues to actively promote cultural and educational exchanges that preserve and celebrate shared heritage. Nigeria’s creative and cultural exports — including Afrobeats music, Nollywood films, and literary works — are already making a significant cultural and economic impact across Saint Lucia and the broader Caribbean, enriching and diversifying the collective cultural landscape of these communities.
