Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently hosted Ghanaian President John Mahama at the State House in Abuja, marking Mahama’s first official visit since his inauguration on January 7, 2025.
Strengthening Regional Diplomacy
During the high-profile meeting, President Mahama provided Tinubu with updates on diplomatic engagements with the military leaders of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. The discussions focused on addressing regional security concerns and strengthening stability within West Africa.
Mahama emphasized the complexity of the ongoing situation, reaffirming that continued dialogue between the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) remains the key to resolving outstanding issues.
“I came to express gratitude for the honor extended to me during my inauguration and also to brief him on my visits to the Sahelian nations. We discussed current issues and the way forward for regional cooperation.”
As the ECOWAS chairman, Mahama acknowledged his responsibility to keep the Nigerian President informed about diplomatic developments and regional concerns.

President Tinubu, in his response, welcomed Mahama’s visit and commended the diplomatic efforts aimed at bridging the gap between AES and ECOWAS nations. He underscored the necessity of fostering regional peace, security, and economic opportunities.

This meeting comes after Tinubu’s visit to Ghana in December 2024, shortly after Mahama’s electoral victory. The continued engagements between both leaders highlight a shared commitment to tackling security threats and fostering economic development within the region.
