Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will officially commence the construction of the world’s largest cotton and polyester processing facility at the Special Agro Processing Zone near Gateway International Airport, located in the Iperu/Ilisan axis of Ogun State.
Governor Abiodun made this disclosure during a meeting with the former Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein, and the Iperu Development Association, at his Oke-Mosan office in Abeokuta. The massive textile facility is part of the “Renewed Hope Cotton Resurgent Initiative” and will be developed on a 400-hectare expanse of land. It is expected to generate employment for about 250,000 individuals on a daily basis.
“In the next 30 to 45 days, we will be breaking ground for the Renewed Hope Cotton Resurgent Initiative, with Mr. President personally overseeing the event. This initiative will host the largest cotton and polyester processing factory in the world,” the governor revealed.
He further explained that the factory’s promoters conducted a state-wide inspection and settled on the Iperu/Ilisan site due to key infrastructural advantages, including the newly constructed airport, accessibility to end consumers, and centralized raw material delivery.
“The site is currently being prepared. Once operational, the factory will span 400 hectares—essentially developing into an entirely new industrial town. The infrastructural needs and the expected economic uplift for Iperu, Remo land, Ijebu region, and Ogun State at large are beyond description,” he said.
Additionally, Governor Abiodun noted that the Nigerian Air Force has proposed establishing a base near the facility. This base will not only secure the airport but also enhance the safety of Iperu and surrounding towns.
Speaking on the strategic choice of Iperu for the Gateway International Airport, the governor stated that the location is central within the state, making it easily accessible. He also announced the upcoming commissioning of 100 newly completed housing units at the Airport Housing Estate.
The administration has also rehabilitated several major roads, including the old Ibadan route and local township roads. Furthermore, public schools and primary healthcare centers have been renovated, and a mother-and-child hospital has been constructed in Iperu.
He extended his appreciation to Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein, hailing her distinguished service as the AGF and celebrating her as a daughter of the soil who served with integrity.
“Your efforts brought various impactful projects to Iperu, including a women’s empowerment center, a mini stadium, and an erosion control initiative. Starting from humble roots, you attended primary and secondary school here in Iperu, progressed to Ogun State Polytechnic, and later Ogun State University, before working with OPIC and rising to the federal level,” he remarked.
“You are focused, disciplined, and a true role model. Your achievements affirm that gender should never be a barrier to excellence.”
In her response, Mrs. Madein thanked the governor for fostering an investment-friendly environment across Ogun State. She noted that her visit was aimed at providing a stewardship report and to show gratitude for the support she received during her tenure.
“The purpose of my visit is to present my stewardship as the Accountant General of the Federation and to acknowledge the contributions I have made to both state and national development. I also want to express gratitude for the support I received during my service,” she said.
The Chairman of the Iperu Development Association, Otunba Taiwo Oyebanjo, emphasized that both the governor and the former AGF have significantly contributed to Iperu’s development, citing the town’s access to modern amenities and improved living standards.
Also speaking, the Ebi of Idena, Oba Lukman Salami, commended the governor for the significant transformation the town has undergone. He noted that Iperu has grown from a village into a modern town under the current administration.
