Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has criticized the current administration, describing it as an “absent-minded government” struggling to address Nigeria’s escalating security crisis. According to him, the Tinubu-led government has become rudderless, leaving the nation exposed to severe threats and worsening insecurity.
In a detailed interview with journalist Ihechukwu Sunday, Adebayo examined the broader landscape of Nigeria’s security challenges, attributing the spike in violence to poor attention, weak coordination, and lack of strategic leadership. He argued that the government’s inability to stay focused on national priorities has created space for bandits, terrorists, and criminal groups to expand their operations unchecked.
Adebayo also commented on the international security concerns raised over the years, referencing the fears of foreign nations about Nigeria’s fragile stability. He condemned the continuous massacre of Christians and cited discussions previously mentioned by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding threats against Christian communities in Nigeria.
He also reacted to the president’s instruction to withdraw police escorts and protection from VIPs, noting that redeploying those officers to active policing could be beneficial—if the plan is properly managed. Adebayo stressed that Nigeria cannot continue operating a security structure where politicians enjoy heavy security while ordinary citizens remain vulnerable.
On the role of the opposition, Adebayo insisted that political parties must remain active, factual, and constructive in their criticism. He emphasized that opposition parties should guide, correct, and pressure the government to perform better, rather than remain silent in times of national danger.
Adebayo concluded that Nigeria’s safety depends on leadership that is intentional, attentive, and committed to its duties. Without focus and clarity, he warned, insecurity would continue to escalate across the country.
