President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to ensuring peace, fostering development, and achieving environmental restoration in Ogoniland.

During a meeting with Ogoni leaders at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized reconciliation and collaboration as key to addressing the longstanding challenges facing the region.

Call for Unity and Reconciliation

President Tinubu urged the Ogoni people to set aside past grievances and work collectively toward a brighter future.

“We cannot rewrite history, but we can correct past anomalies as we move forward. We cannot heal old wounds if we remain angry,” he stated in a release signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information & Strategy.

Directives for Negotiations and Collaboration

In a demonstration of his commitment, Tinubu directed the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to lead negotiations aimed at fostering inclusiveness and mutual understanding. Federal ministries, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and the Rivers State Government were also instructed to work alongside the NSA to address the region’s issues comprehensively.

“We must act with mutual trust. Return home, engage in wider consultations, and ensure inclusivity. Let’s make this effort worthwhile by bringing peace, development, and environmental restoration to Ogoniland,” Tinubu added.

Recognition of Ogoni Contributions

The President acknowledged the sacrifices of the Ogoni people during their fight against military dictatorship in Nigeria, affirming that their efforts were not in vain.

“Many of your sons here were my allies during our resistance. I know what to do in memory of our beloved ones to honor their sacrifices,” Tinubu noted.

Support from Rivers State Governor and Ogoni Leaders

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State expressed appreciation to Tinubu for initiating dialogue and pledged to implement the President’s directives. He assured the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland through timely consultations.

“What we’re doing today solidifies our love and respect for the President. We’ll ensure consultations are completed promptly to restart oil production in Ogoniland,” Governor Fubara said.

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the NSA, commended the Ogoni people for their openness to dialogue. He highlighted the importance of inclusivity, noting that the over 50-member delegation showcased Ogoni’s rich diversity.

“This delegation reflects the Ogoni people’s readiness to pursue peace, justice, and sustainable development,” Ribadu remarked.

Ogoni Monarchs Commit to Cooperation

King Festus Babari Bagia Gberesaako XIII, Gberemene of Gokana Kingdom, speaking on behalf of the Ogoni people, reaffirmed their willingness to partner with the Federal Government in resolving their challenges.
